Xiaomi RedmiBook 14 II notebook is among the first batch of notebooks featuring AMD Ryzen 5 R4500 processor.
We paid RMB ¥3699 (US$550) for the RedmiBook 14 II with AMD Ryzen 5 4500U 6-core processor, 16GB DDR4 RAM, 512GB SSD. It comes with Microsoft Windows 10 Home (Simplified Chinese) Single-language Edition.
The notebook is very price attractive. For notebooks with similar configuration, it would easily cost over US$800. Microsoft Office 2019 Home & Student Edition is complimentary with the notebook purchase. The office suite alone could cost US$100 if buying it separately.
The notebook was pre-installed with Microsoft Windows and Office in Chinese. You can replace it easily with your language choice and the Microsoft licenses remain valid.
Although the price of the notebook is relatively inexpensive, it comes with impressive features. The notebook has metal casing and weights only 1.2kg. It has 14″ anti-glare Full HD (1920×1080) display. It has integrated AMD Radeon RX Vega 6 graphic card, 16GB DDR4 3200MHz RAM, and 512GB SSD Storage Capacity.
Although it is a 14″ notebook, its size is only a bit larger than a 12.5″ notebook. The display has very narrow frame on each side, making it very compact amount 14″ notebooks. The following photos shows the dimension comparison with a Xiaomi notebook with 12.5″ display. This 14″ notebook is only about 3cm wider and a bit thicker.
The RedmiBook 14 II dimensions is 320(width) x 203(depth) x 16.8(height) mm. Xiaomi Notebook Air 12 dimensions is 292(width) x 202(depth) x 12.9(height) mm.
This notebook lacks a built-in camera. For those using video conferencing, the camera may be a must. For others, notebook camera is not necessary as mobile phone has much better camera. The notebook has built-in DTS sound system and built-in microphone. You can speak to Cortana or have audio conferencing with others.
The notebook has Fn+K feature, offering instant switching among 3 performance modes, full-speed, balance and quiet, targeting 3 different user conditions: gaming, work and web-surfing.
16GB DDR4 RAM is generous for most tasks, including casual gaming. Xiaomi claimed the battery lasts 11 hours but from our experience, the battery lasts around 7-8 hours in normal use. A good thing about the notebook is the USB Type C power adapter and supports USB PD3.0 charging. The power adapter is very small and weighs only 100g. It can also charge your mobile phone. When you are traveling, you only need to carry the notebook adapter to charge your notebook, mobile and other USB charging devices.
The power adapter is powerful enough to boost the battery level to 50% in 33 minutes.
In terms of performance, the notebook is fast. It has very good cooling system. It has a row of ventilation holes for heat dissipation underneath. The cooling fan is 30% larger than previous model. Although it runs at lower speed, its overall performance is great and noise is minimal. Even when the notebook is in full speed for 30 minutes, the notebook is only warm underneath. You can still comfortably place the notebook on your lap.
RedmiBook 14 II comes with TPM module and UEFI firmware. Microsoft Device Encryption (using the same BitLocker encryption technology found in the Pro version) can be used to encrypt the notebook hard disk, protecting the files against loss. The data in the notebook is a lot safer when you travel.
RedmiBook 14 II has Microsoft Office 2019 Home & Student Edition pre-installed. You need to activate it after you receive the notebook. Unlike Office 365 subscription that you keep paying the subscription fee to use, the Office 2019 license links to your Microsoft account after activation and it is yours forever. There is no more to pay.
The notebook comes with a fully-function USB Type C port, also work as power input, a USB 3.0, a USB 2.0, a USB Type C (data only) and HDMI ports, as well as a 3.5mm audio port. Unlike similar notebook, this notebook does not have card reader.
Although the pre-installed operating system is Simplified Chinese, you can install Windows 10 Home with any language. What’s more? The Microsoft Office 2019 license remains valid even after you change its language. All you need to do is to download the software from Microsoft online and replace the pre-installed operating system. The notebook’s embedded digital license is valid for all languages of Windows 10 Home operating system.
The total weight of the notebook with the power adapter is 1.3kg, making it ideal for travel. Overall, the build quality is solid. With the compliment Microsoft Office 2019, RedmiBook 14 II notebook at US$550 is steal.
We will have the step by step guide on how to convert the notebook from Chinese Windows to English soon. Stay tune!
